Nuns Moor POW Camp

Not all wartime sites and structures are open to the public, or accessible without prior permission. However, for those living in the Fenham area of Newcastle there is a site hidden right before your eyes, which many may well have already walked over, unaware of its existence.

In Nuns Moor Park, immediately to the north of Studley Terrace, a Prisoner of War camp was located. The site occupied the eastern half of the park and consisted of a number of parallel accomodation blocks and other large buildings. The camp housed Italian prisoners of war who were let out to do work around the town such as road sweeping and postal delivery.

The site seems to have been defended by several trenches immediately to the west which are still visible to this day in the form of shallow depressions.
